CHARLOTTE — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said on Monday morning that Arleigh Alexzander Bryant, 37, was the man killed in an Uptown shooting over the weekend.

Five others were injured in the mass shooting early Sunday morning. This is the third high-profile shooting in a week in Uptown injuring more, and residents say the incidents are making them rethink going out in the area.

There was a nightclub related shooting on North Caldwell Street on July 5. The next morning, there was an officer-involved shooting on North Church Street.

PREVIOUS COVERAGE:

Police say the latest incident happened around 2 a.m. along 7th Street near College Street just as the clubs were closing.

On Monday, CMPD announced during a press conference that two people were in custody in connection with this case.

“Although we are encouraged by the progress in the case the investigation is no way complete,” said CMPD Dep. Chief Ryan Butler Monday afternoon. “I want the community to be angry about this because this is not something anybody should have to tolerate.”

On that night, shots rang out as patrons poured out of nightclubs.

Encore Nightclub confirmed the person killed in the shooting was one of its employees in an Instagram post Sunday.

The club posted its condolences and added the incident was not a result of any conflict inside the club. They said it appeared to be caused by “a senseless act of gun violence.”

Officials said all of the injuries from the survivors are not considered life-threatening.

CMPD said criminals in Uptown are brazen because officers are all over the place. There were multiple officers in the area when violence broke out outside the nightclub.

Witnesses said there was a mad dash to get out of the way with some people leaving purses, wallets and other items behind.

Donnell McCorbin Sr. was working nearby.

“I heard anything from 10 to 20 gunshots. It was loud, close and real aggressive,” said McCorbin.

Something needs to change, he said.

“It ain’t good,” McCorbin said. “They are going to have to find another way or Charlotte ain’t going to have nowhere for them to party and they are going to be really mad.”

Grace Clark, who lives in Uptown, said she won’t forget the sight of crime scene techs working outside her home.

“I saw them in the morning and then later on I saw them outside my building pulling a t-shirt from the bushes doing something with it, but they were out there for a while,” she said.

“We are investing so much in Uptown we are trying to revive it and having shooting like that occur is going to cause our citizens to not want to go Uptown,” said Krista Bokhari, a Republican candidate for the District 6 council seat.

“We come Uptown a lot from the University City area, and yeah, it’s sad and scary,” Uptown visitor Nicole Mosley said.

The violence has some residents worrying for their safety.

“We definitely try and stay away from going out up here because of everything that’s going on,” resident Haylee Bellina said.

Of the eight shooting victims on the block this weekend, they range in age from 19 to 41. Both men and women.
