A young mother of two, shot and killed Wednesday night at an apartment complex in Wadesboro, was an innocent bystander trying to protect her child, police said.
The suspect, Kea’yon Dorrell Richardson, 20, was arrested early Thursday afternoon in Chesterfield County, police said.
Officers were called to the Oak Hill Apartments on North Greene Street at about 8:35 p.m. where a 32-year-old mother was found shot. EMS pronounced Shaneeka Smith dead at the scene.
She was trying to protect her son when shots rang out as kids played outside.
“She should still be here with her children. This shouldn’t have happened to her,” said the victim’s mother, Michelle Smith.
A first-degree murder arrest warrant was issued on the suspect.
The Anson County Sheriff’s Office, Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office and the State Bureau of Investigation are assisting in the homicide investigation.
He was placed into custody in Cheraw, police said.
“You’re a monster to pull out a gun with kids around and shoot like that and shoot somebody like that,” said Javonda Garris, the victim’s cousin.
The investigation into this case is ongoing.
“We are grateful for the dedication of our law enforcement partners and the support of our community throughout this investigation,” police in Wadesboro posted on Facebook.
Richardson is currently in the custody of the Anson County Jail without bond.
