FORECAST: Showers and storms moving out as improvements return this afternoon

Forecast

  • Our severe weather threat is quickly ending, though flooding issues and warnings persist in the High Country through Sunday afternoon.
  • A stray shower is still possible this afternoon, but the severe threat will be gone, and the flood threat will quickly diminish as well.
  • Temperatures will be milder with highs in the mid-70s.
  • Improvements continue Sunday night with skies clearing and sunshine fully returning on Monday.
  • We’ll see much warmer temperatures move in for the work week with highs climbing into the low and mid-80s.
  • Our weather pattern stays dry with our next cold front not arriving until late next week.

Hurricane Isaias

  • Isaias is expected to bring heavy rain, gusty winds, and a small tornado risk to the Carolinas this weekend.
  • The storm made landfall with winds up to 105 mph Friday night near Destin, Florida, in the Florida Panhandle at 8:30 p.m.
  • At least four deaths are tied to the storm.
  • Rain could reach the Charlotte area as early as Saturday morning, becoming steadier and heavier throughout the day.
  • Heavy downpours are expected to continue Saturday night into Sunday morning.
  • A line of stronger storms could move through around sunrise Sunday, bringing a very small risk of quick-forming tornadoes.
  • Rain should gradually taper off after the storms move through.
  • Charlotte could see 1 to 2 inches of rain, with higher totals possible in the mountains and foothills. Wind gusts could reach 30 mph in the Charlotte area, with stronger winds possible farther west.
  • The tornado risk remains low, but forecasters will continue monitoring conditions through the weekend.
