2 killed, 2 hurt in shooting at Rock Hill block party

ROCK HILL, S.C. — Officers are investigating a deadly shooting that happened Saturday night at a neighborhood block party in Rock Hill.

It happened around 10:30 p.m. on Southland Drive. Crime scene tape blocked off a good portion of the road that night.

According to the Rock Hill Police Department, officers heard the gunshots and responded to the block party. It was total panic when those shots rang out. One neighbor told Channel 9′s Glenn Counts people were banging on her door trying to get inside.

“It’s awful, it’s awful that people are that senseless and really don’t care about other people’s lives,” Kamaron Wilson said.

According to Rock Hill police, a woman and a man were shot and killed. Two more people were hurt.

On Monday, the victims were identified as Maricus Kirk, 21, and Montest Mincey, 44.

It’s not clear if police are looking for any suspects.

“I seen a dude laying up under the back part of the car, up on the back part of the truck, so I tried to help him out a little bit, but I don’t think he made it though,” said Antonio White, one of the organizers of the block party.

White said the block party has been a neighborhood tradition for more than 10 years. He said there had never been any trouble before Saturday night.

“Everybody disappointed, shaken up about it, but I think that one right there is the last one,” he told Counts. “I ain’t going to say ‘think.’ I know.”

Neighbors said they heard between five and 10 shots. The incident happened right in front of Austin Roberts’ home.

“We were hiding in the kitchen just trying to keep a low profile,” he said.

A lot of people are disappointed this might be the last block party.

“It’s kind of upsetting that it’s come to that,” Roberts said.

“I know this is something the community looked forward to,” Wilson said. “It’s sad that you can’t do anything positive and fun for the community anymore.”

Some of the neighbors told Counts the 44-year-old woman was trying to be a peacemaker when she was shot and killed. Police have not confirmed if that’s true.

Police have not released any further information about what led up to the shooting.

Rock Hill police asked anyone with information about the shooting to call the dedicated tip line: 803-325-2678.
